Passenger Vehicles Attacked in Kurram: 15 Killed, Dozens Injured in Sectarian Violence
Kurram, Pakistan (October 12, 2024) — A tragic incident unfolded in Kunj Alizai, Kurram, today when a Frontier Corps (FC) convoy was brutally attacked by suspected terrorists from the banned outfit Zainabyoun, resulting in 15 fatalities and numerous injuries, including women and children. The convoy was carrying Sunni passengers from the Muqbal tribe when it was ambushed, adding a devastating blow to the already vulnerable Sunni community in Upper Kurram.
The convoy, comprising a Hiace and other smaller vehicles, was decimated in the assault. According to sources attackers, allegedly led by the Zainabyoun group, launched a coordinated strike on the convoy. This banned outfit has long been suspected of targeting Sunni populations in Kurram, with intelligence sources indicating their continued presence in the area. Today’s assault is seen as yet another move to fuel sectarian tensions and escalate violence in the region.
Kurram has been a flashpoint for Sunni-Shia sectarian rifts for years, with Upper Kurram’s Sunni population particularly at risk due to its geographical position surrounded by Shia communities. Despite the known threats and vulnerabilities, critics argue that the government’s lack of a proactive approach has left the Sunni population, especially those from the Muqbal tribe, Boshehra and Tari Mangal more exposed to such attacks. The absence of decisive action by authorities has drawn widespread condemnation following today’s tragic events.
Local hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed with the injured, who require urgent medical care, while security forces have cordoned off the area in an attempt to prevent further violence. The incident has reignited demands for enhanced security measures and a concerted effort to dismantle extremist networks operating in Kurram.
As the situation continues to develop, the people of Kurram are left to grieve the loss of their loved ones while calling for justice and urgent protection from those responsible for their safety.
